Greatest Bad Movies of Our Time

Its been a long time since i've posted something and this topic seems fitting to resume any dormant blog. Watching Gunda for the umpteenth time yesterday gave a euphoric feeling. I can't help but feel reverence for all the awesome personalities who graced this masterpiece. Definitely THE MOVIE of our time. Mithun da (Prabhuji), Mukesh Rishi, Mohan Joshi, Rami Reddy, Shakti Kapoor and so many others have delivered a movie that has achieved cult status in today's society. People have already blogged exhaustively about this movie. Here's my favourite link. It explains exactly how particular Kanti Shah is about paying attention to details. Another movie belonging to this category is the Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty starrer Waqt Hamara Hai. The real 'protagonist' of the film is actually Rami Reddy who plays the role of the unforgettable character Colonel Chikara. Here's a gist of the movie in the following video:

Having watched this paisa vasool stuff for free, im going to embark on a quest to find out the Truth: Which is the best bad movie of our time? Which movie is so pathetically and ridiculously awesome that you will be left wishing for a sequel! The list is random and not in order of ranking. I have also left out any movies that have been dubbed into Hindi otherwise the list will be too long. However, a few Tamil Classics deserve a mention owing to the presence of Rajinikanth and Chiranjeevi (One does not ignore the Gods). I leave that it to the reader to judge each movie for himself:

2) Loha
4) Mard
8) Sivaji the Boss (Chandramukhi aur Endhiran bhi dekh lo)
10) Bhai
13) Raja
P.S.: here's a link to four of the most bad ass villains in bollywood.
Readers are welcome to suggest any movies i might have missed.
Adios. Looking forward to a month of bad ass movies! \m/

HP Hassles!

No. HP does not stand Harry Potter. Nor doest it stand for Hewlett Packard or Hindustan Petroleum. Nor Hit Points from role playing games (RPGs) nor Horsepower, High Priest, Head Prefect, Hollowpoint, Holiday Pay, Half Pint, Himachal Pradesh, High Pressure, Head Phones, Highway Patrol, Hora Prima. The list is endless. HP is all of these and yet, it is none of these. HP is the dreaded word which adds misery to any students' life. Just ask a final yearite at UDCT and he'll instantly tell you what HP is.
Yes. HP is Home Paper. Also nicknamed Jhol Paper, Horse Poop, Hopeless Process and a string of profane expansions, no other word evokes such emotion from a UDCT student as HP does.

A look at the above figure and one can understand our plight. Unlike other institutes where HP is a group assignment, UDCT has HP as an individual activity. The problem statement is easy. Design a plant manufacturing X tons per annum/day of a product Y from the raw material Z. The answer is generally 200 pages long! So why does HP draw such criticism from the student fraternity? Well, mostly its because one has to provide a fully functional plant design that is not only reliable and efficient but also profitable and safe. And to achieve this means spending hours digging up literature, design data, etc all of which is considered a waste of time in final year.So what's the alternative to all this slogging? Templates of course. Over the years, UDCT students amass an enviable collection of the home papers of previous batches which can be trimmed, extrapolated or simply, hacked and twisted to suit one's need. The only drawback being if your design fails, you have to start from scratch. If your design is correct, then your process is flawed and you have to start from scratch again. If both your process and design are correct, then your chemistry dictates use of environmentally dangerous chemicals ----> start all over again. This loop is infinite and the only way out is the "Template Extrapolation" method or the "Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V" method.

The guides do everything but guide and the library has every research paper known to mankind except the one you are looking for. Now for someone like me who accepts Murphy's Laws, this is no big deal. But to the optimist, this sure is a kick in the teeth. Speaking of getting kicked in the teeth, I suddenly remembered I have to meet my guide today. Gotta make sure my Jhol Paper is foolproof! ^_^

A Tribute to Kurt Cobain

Had he been alive, today would have been Kurt Cobain's 44th birthday. For all the noobs, Cobain was an American singer-songwriter, musician and artist, best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the grunge band Nirvana. He has composed some of the most enduring albums of our time including Nevermind and In Utero. Cobain is remembered as one of the most iconic rock musicians in the history of alternative music. He was voted 7th in MTV's "22 Greatest Voices of All Time". In 2006, he was placed at number twenty by Hit Parader on their list of the "100 Greatest Metal Singers of All Time". A great icon for millions, his life was cut short due to his addiction to drugs. At the age of 27, Cobain committed suicide after a drug overdose. He is a member of the famous Club 27 which also includes Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Brian Jones.
Cobain's music really made an impact on me when i started listening to Nirvana about 6 years ago. His tunes were melodious and soulful. His lyrics (although controversial) really struck a chord with the masses. And his trashing of the set after a concert became iconic in itself as a sign of protest against "The Man".

Kurt Cobain, wherever you are, i hope you have found your "Nirvana". Rest in peace...

Chaos Theory Gets a New Look

Ok so i've finally found a pic that makes a decent enough background. Hope you like it. Its the logo of my favourite death metal band Opeth. I was just listening to some tracks from Morningrise and i noticed that i had set this pic as the Album Art because I didn't like the actual one. Ok I think I'll get back to my late night/early morning joblessness... ^_^

Derby Day Drama

Well Wayne Rooney left Citeh stunned and shell shocked with probably his best goal to date and a strong contender for goal of the season. After the noisy neighbors were silenced, here's what the characters involved had to say.

Stay tuned for more "experts' analysis"! XD

January Transfer Madness

After all the flurry of activity we witnessed last month, it seemed a shame not to make a parody out of it...XD

A few notable absentees include Edin Dzeko n Darren Bent. Couldn't fit em into the storyline :P

New Year Resolutions

Its that time of the year again. The time when we come to the realization that 365 whole days have passed and all that we have to show for it is a drab routine, 2 mark-lists and a crappy "My status messages of the year" app on facebook. Its the time to usher in the new year (duh. anything to keep the party going) and get rolling with those resolutions. First of all, what is the meaning of the word 'resolution'? Wikipedia gives us 43 references to the word 'resolution' O_O
The most relevant definition would be 'a commitment that an individual makes at New Year's Day'. The duration of this commitment being self imposed, one can see a glaring loophole in the annual ritual of making New Year's Resolutions.
While i was sitting thinking about this, i remembered the resolutions i myself made last year:
1. Study More
2. Sleep Less
3. Go to the gym (what harm could it do?)
4. Complete University applications on time
5. Renew contact with at least 3 friends that i hadn't met for over 2 years

So on New Year's Day, 2010, I woke up fresh with a purpose. A sense of direction. A renewed enthusiasm. Or thats what I visualised anyway.
What actually happened is I had an extra lecture on the 1st of January (trust UDCT professors to make their own damn resolutions of finding newer ways to harass a bunch of frustrated TYCE students >_>). So, after partying all night, I went to that lecture. Seeing that all the last benches were occupied, I had to sit with the nerds up front and endure 2 hours of agony. I comforted myself with the notion that I was 'studying more and sleeping less' at least on New Year's Day. So after sleeping 4 hours in the afternoon, I decided to take a stab at gymming. Unfortunately, my dream debut in the gym didn't go according to plan. I pulled a muscle and had to take pain killers for the next few days. (Also, in February, I ended up with a plaster on my foot.) Thus ended option 3 of my resolution. The following Monday on the 4th of January, my results for the previous semester were declared and I had done pretty well compared to the previous sem (in which i had managed to bunk all bio lectures. \m/) After getting the result, I decided I deserved some respite from my 'hectic' schedule so i spent the entire day, and then the entire week sleeping and lazing around the heavenly abode that is room no. 5308. So now, options 1 & 2 were tossed out of the window. The rest of the sem passed by in a blur. Then it was time for internships and so, renewing the resolutions was........ inconvenient! :P College reopened on 1st July to the worst piece of news i've heard since the introduction of the surprise tests: I had been shifted to room no 5226 courtesy some warped up piece of crap PG who got his kicks by being a pain in the asses of all the UG students. RAAAAAGE!!
Fast forward to October when I got a call for a PhD. programme from the University of Connecticut.     (Yay! \m/) More relief than anything else. So i could proudly tick mark option 4.
And finally, it gave me immense pleasure to renew contact with some friends that i had not met in a long time. After meeting Ved Gund, Suraj Dandekar and Omkar Nene, I could finally tick mark option 5 on the list.
So having actually completed 40 % of the resolutions for 2010, I can definitely say that I passed... well, not with flying colours but what the hell. I passed ^_^

2011 will be a year for relaxation and leisure given the success of 2010. Because I have been in the leisure zone for the last 2 weeks, i decided to delay making any resolutions until now. :P So here are my Resolutions:
1. Sleep more (this will be a cinch ^_^)
2. Visit a foreign country apart from the US (hope to do it this vacation :))
3. Go to the gym (what harm could it do?)
4. Cut my hair at least once! (and i think my parents will probably do the honours! :P)
5. Take my kid sister on a tour of Mumbai

Seeing that i can get a 60% on this resolution im really geared for a rocking 2011!
